The HS code is the six-digit international Harmonized Code System used by customs authorities to identify goods being shipped to another country. They vary from one country to the next.
For US imports, four additional digits were added to the HS codes to further break down the item description. These are referred to as HTS codes (Harmonized Tariff Schedule) since they are based on the HS code system.
They are a subset of HTS codes but while HTS codes are used to Import goods to the US, Schedule B are used for Exporting goods from the US. They are generally similar to HTS codes, however there may be differences, so it’s recommended to stick to each type respectively.
The easiest way to identify a code is by accessing a tariff code database. Please see our resources below.
EEI stands for Electronic Export Information and is used for exporting items from the US. It is the method by which individuals may declare the export of merchandise to the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
· The goods are valued at over $2,500.
· A validated export license is required to export the commodity.
· For goods valued at less than $2,500. In such instances, 30.37(a) should be used.
· Goods being shipped to Canada, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Midway Island, Wake Island and American Samoa. However, shipments to Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands are required to file an EEI.
See here for a full list of EEI/AES Exemptions and respective codes.
The exporter is responsible for preparing the EEI and the carrier files it with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) through the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) and within that, AES Direct. You may also authorize an agent/ freight forwarder to submit the EEI on your behalf.
Export info is submitted through the AES or AES Direct system. Please see the AESDirect User Guide for complete instructions.
Some countries impose Sales Tax or Value Added Tax (VAT) on international shipments, and require shippers to provide their recipient's national tax ID number on the label. The ID number is referred to as Tax ID or EIN in the US and as a VAT number (VATIN) in most other countries. It is used to assess the taxability of the entity shipping merchandise.
The EORI stands for Economic Operators Registration and Identification number and is necessary for entities importing to or exporting from the EU. The EORI is provided to customs authorities and helps entities exchange information with customs authorities.
Note that UK requires its own EORI number for entities importing into or exporting from the UK.
While an EORI is used to communicate customs data to authorities, the Tax ID/VAT number is used to assess the taxability of entity shipping the merchandise.
