What are HS codes?

The HS code is the six-digit international Harmonized Code System used by customs authorities to identify goods being shipped to another country. They vary from one country to the next.

 

What are HTS codes and how are they different from HS codes?

For US imports, four additional digits were added to the HS codes to further break down the item description. These are referred to as HTS codes (Harmonized Tariff Schedule) since they are based on the HS code system.

What exactly are Schedule B codes used for and how are they different from HTS codes?

They are a subset of HTS codes but while HTS codes are used to Import goods to the US, Schedule B are used for Exporting goods from the US. They are generally similar to HTS codes, however there may be differences, so it’s recommended to stick to each type respectively.

 

How do I identify the appropriate HS, HTS, and Schedule B Codes for my goods?

What is EEI?

EEI stands for Electronic Export Information and is used for exporting items from the US. It is the method by which individuals may declare the export of merchandise to the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

 

When is EEI required?

·         The goods are valued at over $2,500.

·         A validated export license is required to export the commodity.

 

Is EEI ever not required?

·         For goods valued at less than $2,500. In such instances, 30.37(a) should be used.

Who is responsible for preparing an EEI?

The exporter is responsible for preparing the EEI and the carrier files it with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) through the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) and within that, AES Direct. You may also authorize an agent/ freight forwarder to submit the EEI on your behalf.

How do I submit Electronic Export Info (EEI)?

What is a Tax ID/VAT number?

Some countries impose Sales Tax or Value Added Tax (VAT) on international shipments, and require shippers to provide their recipient's national tax ID number on the label. The ID number is referred to as Tax ID or EIN in the US and as a VAT number (VATIN) in most other countries. It is used to assess the taxability of the entity shipping merchandise.

What is an EORI number and is it the same as a Tax ID/VAT number?

The EORI stands for Economic Operators Registration and Identification number and is necessary for entities importing to or exporting from the EU. The EORI is provided to customs authorities and helps entities exchange information with customs authorities.
